There was a time when a person looking to buy clothes actually went to a clothing store. It was a place that had a selection of shirts, pants, scarfs, and perhaps even accessories. The shopper would choose a piece that was on the floor, or perhaps in the backroom, paid for it, and took it home. The options were limited to the stock that the retailer had on hand. If the customer wanted a red shirt, but the retailer only had a brown one, the customer went elsewhere or settled for a brown shirt. As a result, retailers had to have a large variety of clothing stored on site to provide potential customers with the styles, sizes and variations they would be willing to buy.

This business model had a lot of inefficiencies in it. Manufacturers sometimes over produced a particular piece that wasn’t popular, or tied up cash reserves by warehousing the stock until a retailer requested more inventory. A variation of the problem was simply not making enough of a popular product, thus missing out on sales opportunities. Just as retailers had to warehouse clothing so did the manufacturers.
