This week marks a turning point for WhichPLM. Our new website (the one you have before you) launched on 1st February 2011 – six months ago this Monday. To celebrate the occasion (and in support of our announcement of the new WhichPLM Annual Review 2011), we have today released our 20,000 word 2010 Customer Survey to all our readers, completely free of charge.
Rather than just remark on the occasion today, I realised that a lot has changed in the intervening period, presenting me with an opportunity for reflection. In terms of raw statistics, we’ve come farther than I’d imagined we could in such a short space of time.
Our traffic has more than doubled, and each month more than a thousand new readers arrive at our pages. In an average month we now see ten times more traffic than we did at the beginning of the year. Our information, insight and advertising now reach a wider and more diverse audience than ever before – many times over.
I unfailingly see room for improvement, though. In the same span of time, we have: launched a new website (which is far from static, and sees routine development even today); created a pioneering piece of bespoke software in our PLM Comparison Tool; assembled the most comprehensive list of PLM suppliers anywhere on the web; redefined what we mean when we talk about Product Lifecycle Management; welcomed vendors of “expanded PLM” and consultants of every stripe to join WhichPLM; and, I hope, continued to develop and improve upon our reporting, with interviews and insight from myself, Rob Smith, and a wide range of thought-leaders from across our industry.
Typifying the kind of insight we thrive on here, this week saw JW Yates of Business Management Systems discussing the impact that labour compliance and regulation can have. Using several high-profile examples, he shows us how significant a risk to profitability non-compliance can be. We can be in no doubt now that doing good is as much of a strategic imperative as it is a moral one – and one that businesses ignore at their peril.
In yet a further instalment of his series of vendor interviews covering the deployment of true end-to-end systems, Rob Smith this week talked to Kevin Piotrowski of Infor. Together they discussed how individual solution components suit different kinds of organisations, and when the term end-to-end really begins to apply.
In a timely move for a week where I have been ruminating on change, Centric Software introduced their “Capture It” iPhone application yesterday. As visions of the future go, this one is particularly compelling. The patent-pending app allows designers and trend-spotters to quickly and easily disseminate new trends from the fashion capitals of the world right across their organisation, using PLM to streamline the process whereby those outré haute couture designs are transformed into wearable (and saleable) garments.
Finally, speaking of multinational ways of working, this week New Generation Computing (NGC) were recognised as a “Great Supply Chain Partner” by analysts Supply Chain Brain in their 2011 summary of the best and most reliable supply chain vendors.
